In May 1964 in Resacca he left his wife and two children in care of Relatives when he Enlisted at Henderson, Kentucky to guard Border and suppress Guerrilla Warfare. Sent in pursuit of men in Morgan's raid going as far as Louisville. Later Joined Burnsides Army & marched across Mountains to Knoxville. Promoted to orderly Sgt. 07-1862, 12-1863 Made 2nd Lieut.. Participated in all battles of East Tennessee during winter of 63 & 64. At Resana & Capture of Dallas, taken ill and sent to Officers Hospital at Lookout Mtn. Rejoined Reg. at Atlanta, taken ill again, sent to Hospital at Marietta, tried to re-join outfit but could not. Came to Iowa in 1866.

His Brigade Commander was Benjamin Harrison (Ex President). He treasured two letters written long hand from Mr Harrison some years after the war closed. He kept a Diary giving a very accurate account of every battle and march in which his Regiment participated. The original copy of this diary is now held by his son Charles E. Castle of Chicago, Illinois. During his lifetime he wrote many short articles for the National Tribune and often referred to his war diary for accurate discriptions.
